10 Tips To Avoid The Junk

We're a quarter into 2015. We all made vows that this year was the year we were actually going to stick to our diets for once. Was that not the case for you? Have no fear, below are some top 10 tips on how to avoid eating the junk!



1. Need a chocolate fix? Try a light hot chocolate option. I really like the Cadbury's Highlights they help to satisfy any chocolate craving and the best bit is they contain only 38 calories a sachet! 

2. Try to avoid snacking inbetween meals. This is a really bad habit of mine as of course a chocolate bar or a packet of crisps is the easy option. Opt for a small yoghurt, a bag of grapes or even a slice of toast if you're not a fruit lover.

3. Avoid takeaways/fast food at all costs. I know they are convenient and I lately have become especially guilty of taking a trip one too many to my local Costa or Starbucks. Prepare your lunch the night before and place it in the fridge - can't use the excuse of having no time to make your own now, can you? 

4. Treat yourself. Calculate the amount of money you spend on eating fast food when you're out and about, the cost will quickly add up. That new lipstick or jacket you're desperate to buy? Print a picture of it out or screenshot it and set it as your phone lock screen. That way, the next time you're faced with spending money on a McDonald's you'll soon become rid of the urge. 

5. Actually treat yourself. If you cut out junk food completely when you begin to turn back to it (Because we all do in the end, don't lie!) you'll probably fall down that spiralling path of missing it so much and eating just a little bit too much of it and all that hard work and good eating will have been a waste. Choose one day a week or even just a specific date every month to be a treat day and to make that day become a day to eat whatever you wish just for one day. You'll appreciate the taste much more and thus, really look forward to that day every month. 

6. Read quotes. I find it so motivating when I read something as a reminder to keep going. Recently I decided to write down some quotes onto slips of paper and to roll them up into a couple of jars. Each morning I'll pick one out and it really helps to place me in a good and motivated mood for the day. For example:

"What you eat in private, you wear in public

On some cards I also have little tasks set for me to carry out that day such as to eat my 5 a day, something which I should probably work on more! But this way it becomes more of a challenge and a game for myself rather than a chore. 

7. Write it down. When it comes to fitness and healthy eating, writing down exactly how I feel on a bad day where I have ate far too much rubbish and I feel as big as a house works as a massive motivator for me. None of us enjoy feeling like crap but we should use that feeling and compare it to the feeling of happiness or self-achievement when we've had a good day exercising or eating well and assumably on those days you feel pretty proud of yourself. This always helps me to keep going and reminds me of how much better I feel when I eat well consistently rather than sitting around doing nothing all day and eating an excessive amount of chocolate, ice-cream and pizza. 

8. Break free from old routines. If you're somebody who does the same thing every day so you're either in school or work a full time job then there's probably a time you associate with snack time. It's easy to fall into a habit and your body naturally becomes hungry then specifically if you have trained it to know that 10:30 every day is your time to bag that 50p cookie. Instead, distract yourself. Sometimes keeping ourselves busy during our snack time will help your mind to focus on something else rather than that cookie. You could go for a walk around the block or finish off that english essay that you've decided to leave the ending of half an hour before your lesson. 

9. Drink enough fluid. Drinking the RDA of water each day will probably fill you up in between meals rather than snacking on a bag of crisps. Not only will you be able to flush out your body of any unwanted toxins but the action of placing a drink into your mouth can actually psychologically trick your body into thinking it is being fed.

10. Find alternatives. Don't like water? Add some chopped fruit into a glass of water this could literally be anything. Strawberries, lemons, oranges you name it. This will add a sweet taste to the water, allowing you to satisfy those sugary drink cravings. Instead of crisps try baking some apple chips!
